Questions people ask
Is Quill&Steel OS a good Plottr alternative?
Yes, particularly for fantasy and romantasy writers who need substantial worldbuilding alongside their plot.
Is Plottr free?
No. Plottr currently offers a 30-day free trial of its desktop version, followed by paid annual or lifetime access. Plottr Pro also offers monthly subscriptions. Its standard desktop plan currently starts at $60/year.
Can you create fantasy maps in Plottr?
No, Plottr does not have a native fantasy map builder like Quill&Steel OS does.
Does Plottr have family trees?
Yes. Plottr introduced its Family Tree feature in 2025 for visually mapping character relationships. Quill&Steel OS generates family trees automatically from the relationships you've already entered on your characters.
Can I write my novel in Plottr?
Technically, but Plottr says that isn't what the software is built for and recommends writing the bulk of your manuscript in dedicated writing software. Its normal workflow is to export your outline to Microsoft Word or Scrivener before drafting. Quill&Steel OS includes a manuscript editor and exports finished manuscripts to DOCX, ePub and PDF.
Does Plottr use AI?
No. Plottr says it does not include generative AI and announced in 2026 that it has no plans to add AI writing features. Quill&Steel OS also has no generative AI and does not send your writing to an AI model.
