Everything you need

A character tree builder that draws itself

Most family tree generators hand you a blank canvas. This one builds the chart out of the relationships already on your characters.

Drawn from your characters

Set a character's parents, spouse or siblings on their profile and they appear on the tree. There's no second chart to keep in sync with your notes.

Generations that line up

Each generation gets its own row, married couples sit side by side, and children hang below the parents they belong to.

Every house on one canvas

Unrelated families each get their own band, titled by the surname they share, so a whole world of bloodlines fits on a single page.

Half-siblings and second marriages

Share one parent and the tree draws a half-sibling line. Share both and it draws a full one. A character can have more than one partner.

Portraits and one click through

Every card carries the character's portrait and role, and clicking one opens their full profile.

Arrange it your way

Zoom, pan and go fullscreen, or drag a family anywhere on the canvas. Your arrangement is saved, and one click puts everyone back.

Fantasy Family Tree Generator Quill&Steel OS

All in one place

Your family tree is part of the rest of your world

The tree isn't a separate document. It's drawn from the same characters who appear on your fantasy timeline, your maps, your cultures and religions, your organizations, and your manuscript.

Change a parent on a character's profile and the tree redraws. Nothing to update manually.

FAQ

What is a fantasy family tree maker?

It's a tool for charting the bloodlines of made-up people: who fathered whom, who married into which house, and how the cousins in chapter twelve are related to the king. Unlike an ancestry site, it expects invented names, invented houses and characters who live for centuries.

How do I make a family tree for my characters?

Start your free trial and add your characters. Open a character's profile, set their Parents, and add Spouse or Sibling links on their Relationships tab. Then open the Family Tree and it's already drawn, generation by generation.

Does it draw the tree for me?

Yes. Most family tree generators hand you a blank canvas and a box tool. This one reads the relationships you've already set on your characters and works out the generations, the marriage bars and the lines down to each child. You only drag things if you want to rearrange them.

Can it handle half-siblings and remarriages?

Yes. Characters who share one parent are drawn with a half-sibling line, and characters who share both get a full one. A character can have more than one spouse or partner, which is what most dynasties need sooner or later.

Can I have more than one family tree?

You don't need to choose. Every unrelated family is drawn as its own band on the same canvas, with the family's surname above it, and you can drag each one where you want it. Characters with no family links yet are listed underneath, ready to be placed.

Can I track noble houses and dynasties?

Yes. Each house appears as its own titled family, and every card links back to that character's full profile, where the organizations they belong to, their religion and their history live. So a royal family tree sits right beside the politics behind it.

Can I use it for OCs or fanfiction characters?

Yes. Every character on the tree is one you created, so OCs, fan characters and a cast borrowed from your own earlier books all work the same way.

Can I download or print my family tree?

Not as an image yet. You can open the tree fullscreen, arrange it how you like and take a screenshot. Your characters and their relationships are included in the full world export, which gives you every profile as a Markdown file.

Is the Quill&Steel OS fantasy family tree maker free?

You can try it free for 14 days, with no card required. After that, the family tree is included on every Quill&Steel OS plan. See pricing.
